HOUSTON – February 1, 2014 – Poets and writers Aliki Barnstone, Leslie Adrienne Miller, and Melissa Studdard will be joined by special guest Donna McKenzie and composer/pianist John Hardesty for “An Evening of Poetry and Music” at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1015 Holman Street at Main, on April 4, 2014 from 7-9 PM.
Aliki Barnstone is a poet, translator, critic, and editor. Her books of poems are Bright Body (White Pine, 2011), Dear God, Dear Dr. Heartbreak: New and Selected Poems (the Sheep Meadow Press, 2010), Blue Earth (Iris, 2004), Wild With It (Sheep Meadow, 2002), a National Books Critics Circle Notable Book, Madly in Love (Carnegie-Mellon, 1997), Windows in Providence (Curbstone, 1981), and The Real Tin Flower (introduction by Anne Sexton and published by Macmillan in 1968, when she was twelve years old). Professor of English in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Missouri, Columbia, Barnstone was educated at Brown University (A.B. and M.A.), Middlebury Language School in Spanish, the University of California at Santa Cruz, and the University of California at Berkeley (Ph.D.). Leslie Adrienne Miller is the author of six collections of poetry including Y, The Resurrection Trade and Eat Quite Everything You See from Graywolf Press, and Yesterday Had a Man in It, Ungodliness, and Staying Up For Love from Carnegie Mellon University Press. Professor of English at the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota, she holds a Ph.D. from the University of Houston, an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, an M.A. from the University of Missouri, and a B.A. from Stephens College.
Melissa Studdard is the author of the best selling novel Six Weeks to Yehidah; its companion journal, My Yehidah (both on All Things That Matter Press); and the newly released collection, The Tiferet Talk Interviews. Six Weeks to Yehidah has been the recipient of the Forward National Literature Award, the Pinnacle Book Achievement Award, the International Book Award, and January Magazine's best children's books of 2011. Studdard is currently nearing completion of her first poetry collection, I Ate the Cosmos for Breakfast to be published by Saint Julian Press in 2014. Her poetry, fiction, essays, reviews, and articles have appeared in dozens of journals and anthologies, including Boulevard, Connecticut Review, Pleiades, and Poets & Writers. She received her MFA from Sarah Lawrence College and is an English Professor for the Lone Star College System and a teaching artist for The Rooster Moans Poetry Cooperative. Poems on the SJP site.
John Hardesty - Composer/Pianist: John's improvisational work has brought him to the stage with a variety of interesting people, including Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson and Greg Braden. As a pianist/composer, Hardesty won the 2006 Inspirational Song of the Year - New Thought Songwriters Award for his “Everlasting Love.” His gift of creating music in the moment has inspired audiences everywhere. “John has an innate gift in translating thoughts, emotions, and feelings into music. To sit quietly and witness a live performance by John is profound beyond measure.”
Donna McKenzie is a Saint Julian Press artistic partner, producer, and special guest. Donna is a Houston based voice talent, speaker, radio personality and creative alchemist with a passion for food, music and poetry. Her voice has been heard on Houston's airwaves for almost 25 years, she is currently a co- host for NASA's Third Rock Radio, as well as their custom stations in partnership with RFC Media. A national voiceover talent, she has voiced commercials seen on MTV, VHI, Lifetime Channel and is a prominent voice talent in the concert industry.

Ron Starbuck (Saint Julian Press - Publisher & CEO) is author of When Angels Are Born and Wheels Turning Inward, he has written poetry and practiced contemplative prayer for many years. Both books are a rich collection of over fifty poems, following a poet’s mythic and spiritual journey that crosses easily onto the paths of many contemplative traditions. He has been a contributing writer for Parabola Magazine. And has been published in Tiferet: A Journal of Spiritual Literature, plus an interview and poem in The Criterion: An Online International Journal in English, and The Enchanting Verses Literary Review. In 2014 some his his newest poems will appear in Levure littéraire and Pirene"s Fountain.
